Originally produced in Sydney entitled, ‘The Wharf’, the shows composer Joe Kiely moved to New York City, bringing the musical along for redevelopment. The story quickly changed to a New York setting, characters were trimmed, reshaped, and the whole piece was ‘americanized’. Shortly after, a production team was established, and Keith Gildea was brought in as Director, with Zach Drummer writing the new book for performances in October 2011. Joe extracted themes and elements from ‘The Wharf’ and reworked them with the new songs and score for ‘Crab House’.
‘Crab House’ explores the mechanics inside the hospitality industry, highlighting the repetitive and mundane nature of working tables, and the certain drive people have toward their own success. This dark comedy is inspired by actual events, derived from actual characters, and was a sold out run in Sydney. The performances from 2011 were studio recorded, and an album is in the works with a release date of 14th Feb 2012.
